It all started with the blue wide-brimmed hat. I proudly placed it on the counter and the sales clerk asked, “Where are you going to wear this hat?” She was taken back to learn that I’d planned on wearing it while I garden or maybe even take it to the beach. “Oh, I can see this hat with a beautiful dress,” she exclaimed.  ”You can,” I asked?  ”Yes, I can,” she repeated.

And so I started imagining what kind of dress I would wear with my new blue hat, and to what occasion I’d have to wear it.

I daydreamed of ladies wearing swirly garden dresses, accessorized with pretty pearls, gathered in my backyard.  We’d all be wearing wide-brimmed hats and hold out our pinkies as we sipped tea.   We’d visit and laugh and make memories.

I decided that this will be the Spring to bring my imaginary garden party to life.   I’ll send out pretty invitations announcing the Spring time soiree.   The invitations will adorn the fronts of  refrigerators, pin boards and calendars as we all look forward  to the party.  They’ll call to ask if they can bring anything to which I’ll say, “just yourself.”

After a while, we’ll kick off our shoes and enjoy the touch of the cool grass carpet on our feet.  Some will have to leave early, but others will linger.  We’ll enjoy one more glass of wine or a mimosa and bond over shared stories.  Someone will glance at their watch and wonder where the time has gone.  The women will scurry and bid their adieus, but before they go, my friends will offer to help me gather the plates and put away the party decor.  I will let them.

I’ll walk them to their cars then come inside and sink into the sofa, wearing a smile of satisfaction over a fun day with friends.   I’ll think that all the party preparation was well worth it , and my thoughts will drift to next year’s party.
