Have you ever been clothes shopping, finally narrowing down your selection to a few outfits that look great…but you just can’t decide?
So, you try them all on again. And, one more time just to make sure, twirling around in the mirror and taking note of what each outfit says about you.
Soft and pretty.
Sexy and chic.
Or, classic and bold.
Then, in a moment of clarity you decide.
That’s what it was like picking out a paint color for the hallway. And, even after I’d made a decision and bought the paint, even as I opened the can, I wondered if I’d made the right choice.
But after I folded up the ladder and put away my paint brush, there was no question.
The hallway is so warm, cozy and inviting now. And, the bold contrast of the surrounding colors looks really rich.
I think my favorite is how sophisticated the gold looks with the gray colors in my daughter’s room.
Warm, cozy, inviting. Rich and sophisticated. Those are some of my design words, which leads me to a few tips I want to share with you on how to pick out the perfect paint color.
1) Know your style.
2) Decide on the mood or feeling you’re trying to create.
3) Understand basic color harmony. This video by Sherwin-Williams will get you started.
4) Choose from color collections that are designed to go together.
Once you’ve narrowed down your selection, buy paint samples. Not the little chip cards, but actual samples of the paint. Apply the color to a poster board or something similar, and tape it onto the wall.
Tip: Our Color Consultant advised us to use white painters tape around our sample so that the surrounding wall color wouldn’t distract from the sample color. We tried it and it really helped.
Observe the color over at least a 24 hour period of time to see how it looks in the lighting of your home throughout the day.
Now, I just have to decide which color to paint the Command Center.
See you in class,
