As I was lying in bed the other night, my thoughts were about a boy; a former student of mine whose mother worried over him.
In different conversations, she would mention certain observations and behaviors that concerned her: loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, fatigue…
As I thought about our conversations and began piecing together the symptoms, I realized that they were all too familiar, symptoms I myself had experienced that eventually led to a hypothyroidism diagnosis.
I mentioned it to the boy’s mother and she followed up with their doctor. Sure enough, her son was diagnosed with a thyroid disorder. The subsequent email I got from her, thanking me and crediting me for helping their son, brought tears to my eyes.
I thought about the years of not knowing and the dealing with symptoms that I’d endured before my diagnosis, and how this little boy had been spared that. I could see God’s hand in the circumstances, both mine and the boy’s. And, I knew that God used me to come alongside that family during their time of distress.
It was quite miraculous to watch the life spring back into the boy’s body. He literally had a twinkle in his eyes and a smile where there hadn’t been one before.
His quality of life was so much better, all because God cared about a boy.
All praise to the God and Father of our Master, Jesus the Messiah! Father of mercy! God of all healing counsel! He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, He brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 The Message
Amen and amen.
