Have you ever noticed that on all of the HGTV shows about buying houses that there are always three choices?
And that each choice gets a nickname like Pricey but Perfect, or Small Suburban?
Well, I spent the better part of yesterday trying to pick fabric for an upcoming project, and I’ve narrowed it down to…three choices:
This fabric is striking and definitely provides a wow factor. But is it too bold?
I love the varying shades of blue in this floral print. It also complements the window treatments in the room really well. I just wonder if the colors are too underwhelming.
Toile. I’ve had an affection for toile for years. And, I’ve had my eye on this particular print for a very long time. But, will it make my room look too old-fashioned?
I have three great choices, and I don’t think I can go wrong with any of them. Whichever fabric I pick, it will have to meet all of these criteria:
1. Mix Patterns
Since I love mixing patterns, I want to add something to complement the existing patterns in the room. Floral or Toile would both be a good choice to go with the solids and stripes I already have.
2. Create a Color Scheme
My living room color palette is blue and brown with green accents, which is reflected in this geometric patterned pillow. That is my jumping point. All other fabric selections will have to color coordinate with that pillow.
Tip: You can get fabric swatches before committing to a fabric. Swatches in stores like JoAnn’s and Hobby Lobby are typically free. Online samples are usually larger and cost a few dollars.
3. Define Your Style
Even though I can’t quite put a name to it, I know my style. The fabric has to fit into the casually elegant, vintage yet timeless, traditional-with-a-french-accent look and feel of my home.
4. Set the Mood
I have to love the fabric. And it has to evoke feelings of ease and comfort. Much like this art did when I first saw it.
I recommend these criteria not only for choosing fabric, but any home decor.
You’ll get to see my final choice in a few weeks. Which one do you think I’ll pick: Bold Traditional, Soft Floral or Timeless Toile?
See you in class,
