I have a confession to make; I don’t prefer the rustic or industrial decorating styles that are so popular right now.
But, I was attracted to a German vintage crate because of my German roots. So, even though the crate was both rustic and industrial, being the sentimental soul that I am, I bought it anyway.
I figured that I’d surely find a place for it.
It’s been a vase, a shoe basket, a wine rack,
a hot chocolate station, a printer stand, and most recently a side table.
But, it always looked too rustic, so I considered getting rid of it. Instead, I decided to try one more time to find a way to use the crate when it dawned on me…
I’d been wanting to find something to place under the blue dresser in the foyer. I held my breath as I set the crate in place. Then, stepped back to take a look…and fell in love.
Tip: Anytime you have a piece that is too (fill in the blank) try mixing it with other styles. For example mix a little something modern with vintage items, or something rustic with something glam. I’ve spared several home accents from their fate in the donation pile with this trick.”
I love the juxtaposition of the rustic crate with the glam dresser, and how the weathered wood keeps the foyer from being too fussy….
This crate…is the casual to my elegance.
And that, casual elegance, is how I’ve always defined my style.
See you in class,
