I have a different approach to Fall decorating; one that focuses on capturing the essence of the season like the feeling of security and comfort brought on by shorter days, familiar routines, and warm comfort food.
The crisp air and falling leaves are my cue, sending me into full on nesting mode in an effort to add warmth and comfort to my home.
I take picking pillows and coordinating color-palettes very seriously, paying attention to every last detail and spending weeks searching for just the right natural elements and seasonally appropriate textiles…
The natural beauty of the front porch beckons us to breathe in the cooler air as we sip on our favorite warm beverage.
The sunflowers in the foyer bring cheer to everyone who comes through the front door.
Blankets and pillows pull their weight in the living room by adding warm texture and colors reminiscent of Fall skies and changing leaves.
In the kitchen? Well, we just start using the oven again. There’s nothing like the click, click, click sound of a gas stove.
And after putting the finishing touches in place, I realized that all of this twittering and fluttering about my house not only prepared my home for the new season, but my family as well.
We look forward to fresh-baked blueberry muffins or hot biscuits for breakfast,
curling up under cozy blankets for Sunday afternoon naps,

Snapped this picture on my cellphone… a Sunday nap in progress a couple of weeks ago.
Fall gatherings, the warm glow of the fireplace,
tending to flowers
and family time on the front porch.
That is the twist; decorating that not only invites you to enjoy the Fall season, but also to live the lifestyle you crave.
Teacher’s Notes:
- As you decorate your home for the holidays (or anytime of the year) start by considering the lifestyle you desire and create an environment that supports it.
- Save money by using what you already have to capture the feel of the season with color, texture and scents.
- Then, fill in missing items inexpensively. It’s not about what you buy, but why you buy it.
