I pictured us collapsing on her new bed, covered in billowy white sheets and me saying, “just one more thing,” as I revealed a carefully curated gift basket.

Yes there would be grocery cards and postage stamps and toiletries, but there would also be some unexpected things.
Like a simple, graphic pin board with pretty, magnetic pins for keeping reminders of when assignments are due, or tickets to a concert, and even photos as she makes new friends and creates fun memories. Maybe there will be room for a photo or two from home, too.
And a personalized weekly planner, with feathers on the pastel cover to symbolize my girl, spreading her wings.
Then, there’s the extra something. The unexpected treasure that will remind her of home no matter where she goes. A custom map of our neighborhood, right down to our street. The street she played on, and where friends lived, and she can always come home to.
But, in all the dorm-room-planning excitement, I couldn’t wait.
So the other day as Hannah lamented over the missing “inspiration piece” for her college dorm room, I pointed to the stack of boxes I’d tucked away for that just-right moment in her new room, and told her to open them.
I may have spoiled the surprise, but the moment was everything I’d hoped for.
